The past few nights have not gone lower that 20 degrees and the days are over 30, so we are enjoying the hot weather.
Highlights So Far:
- Seeing a Di Vinci painting and 5 Van Gogh paintings at The National Gallery. So inspiring! We also saw a portrait of "Suzannah" who had a face just like/similar to my own!!!
- Climbing 530 steps to the top of St Pauls Cathedral.
- Going to Westmister Abbey and seeing the House of Houses where the monks of 1300s had meetings; and parliament members have had meetings. It is said "As the rose is the flower of flowers, so the house is the House of Houses." What a beautiful place. It is wonderful how at St Pauls and Westmister that people have been honoured after their death. The detail and ornateness of the cathedrals was exquisite.
- Met up with Debbie last night for dinner at Wagamama restaurant along the Thames River.
- Visited Shakespear's Globe theatre which was great.
- Crossed the Millenium Bridge.
- Visted the Canterbury Cathedral where St Thomas Becket was murdered while being arrested for his beliefs. I was amazed how very old the cathedral was, having been built in 597AD. The stain glass windows were beautiful.
- Leeds Castle was great - might move in ;o)
- Our coach tour guide Godfrey sung us the White Cliffs of Dover song before we saw them. It was lovely.
- Winchester Cathedral is where Jane Austin was buried. We took a picture of this.
- Winchester is one of the places Camalot is thought to have been.
- Stonehenge was big. Tried to meet up with Phil, Sue and Charlotte Spear today but missed them which is a shame :(
- Bath was lovely and old and had beautifully old architecture.
- We visited the Jane Austin Centre which took us many blocks to walk in the rain, but worth it. I got my picture taken next to Mr Darcy!!!
- Four hour traffic jam on the way back, apparently mostly due to a large-ish puddle!
From Andrew:
The cars pepole drive in central London are amazing - yesterday I saw a couple of Aston Martins, a couple of Bentleys, Porches, a stretch Hummer - everything else on the road is a BMW, Audio, a bus or a taxi. Apparently there is a toll to drive anywhere near the city and there are no parks, so on the rich bother.
London Aquarium was a surprise hit, we got to stroke a few stingrays and took lots of photos. The Suzannah painting that Sarah mentioned really did look like her! I can't remember who painted it but he has good taste.
Have been to a million sights, about 1% of which we have described above, we will be putting more detailed information and photos online over the next couple of days, have been to busy having adventrues to find an internet cafe yet.
Highlights - Day 5
- Visited Hyde Park.
- Bought a 100 percent cashmere top fro, Harrods with 50 percent off.
- Bought a 100 percent cashmere gloves fro, Harvey Nics (as the locals call it _ Nicholls to visiters): This shop is mentioned on Absolutely Fabulous, and is the testing ground for designers to see what the locals like and dont.
- At both shops we were surprised at the price of things. I saw a beautiful dress with 75 percent off for 1500 Euro!!!
- While five storeys of overpriced clothes did not interest me (A) so much, we did see an Aston Martin parked outside which brightened up my day, it was the fifth that I had seen in five days, I got a pic :)
